Overview

RAEBUILD successfully completed a heritage restoration project at All Saints CE Primary School, Rangemore, on behalf of John Taylor Multi Academy Trust. The Grade II listed Victorian school, originally opened in 1873, required specialist repairs and replacement of key architectural timber features to preserve its historic character and ensure its long-term protection.

The Brief

All Saints CE Primary School is a Grade II listed building of significant architectural and historic importance, dating back to 1873 and believed to have been designed by renowned architect William Butterfield. Over time, several external timber elements had deteriorated due to age and exposure to the weather, requiring specialist restoration and replacement works to preserve the building’s character and structural integrity.

The brief called for the replacement of fascia boards, decorative finials, and Gothic-style doors and frames, while ensuring all new elements accurately reflected the original design and detailing.

As a heritage project, maintaining authenticity, protecting the listed building fabric, and delivering the highest standards of craftsmanship were critical requirements throughout the works.

The Solution

We were appointed as Principal Contractor through the Staffordshire County Council Framework and worked closely with our specialist joinery division, Stafford Joinery, to deliver the project. Detailed surveys of the existing timber features were undertaken to assess deterioration and identify opportunities to retain and restore original elements wherever possible.

New fascia boards, finials, and Gothic-style doors and frames were carefully manufactured using sustainably sourced timber and traditional joinery techniques to replicate the original profiles and detailing.

Particular attention was given to preserving the building’s historic appearance, with handcrafted finials and bespoke timber components produced to match the original Victorian features.

Installation works were undertaken with great care to ensure seamless integration with the existing structure and to protect the integrity of the listed building throughout the construction process.

The Outcome

Completed in December 2024, the project has successfully restored key architectural features of this historic school building while preserving its unique character and heritage significance.

The replacement timber elements provide improved durability and weather protection while remaining faithful to the original Tudor Gothic Revival design.

Through specialist craftsmanship, careful material selection, and a sensitive approach to heritage conservation, RAEBUILD has helped safeguard an important community asset for future generations.

The completed works enhance the appearance of the school, extend the lifespan of critical building elements, and ensure this Grade II listed landmark continues to serve pupils, staff, and the local community for many years to come.
