Client: Stoke-on-Trent City Council

Overview

RAEBUILD successfully completed a comprehensive restoration and refurbishment project at the historic Stoke Town Hall, enhancing key civic and event spaces while preserving the building’s architectural character and heritage significance. The project improved the functionality, appearance and longevity of this important public building while respecting its historic fabric.

The Brief

Stoke Town Hall is one of the city’s most prominent civic buildings, featuring ornate interiors, historic stained-glass windows and traditional architectural detailing. The brief was to restore and improve several areas within the building, including Jubilee Hall and the Jubilee Lounge, whilst addressing maintenance issues affecting the building envelope. Works were required to be undertaken within a live public building, ensuring minimal disruption to ongoing civic functions and events while maintaining the high standards expected of a heritage restoration project.

The Solution

We delivered a carefully managed programme of restoration and refurbishment works throughout the Town Hall. Internal spaces were redecorated to refresh and protect historic finishes, while the Jubilee Hall benefited from roof repairs and window restoration works designed to preserve the building’s character and improve long-term performance.

The project also included the installation of a new bar facility and the complete strip-out of the existing bar within the Jubilee Lounge to create a more modern and functional hospitality space.

Externally, the existing 1950s cantilevered concrete canopy at the Glebe Street entrance was removed, allowing the original stonework beneath to be repaired and reinstated, enhancing the appearance of the building and restoring important architectural features.

The Outcome

The completed works have revitalised key public areas within Stoke Town Hall, providing improved facilities for civic events, functions and community use while safeguarding the building’s historic character.

The restoration of windows, roof elements and stonework has helped protect the fabric of the building for future generations, while the refurbished internal spaces offer an enhanced visitor experience.

Through careful conservation and sympathetic refurbishment, the project successfully balanced modern requirements with the preservation of an important heritage asset.
