Classroom Replacement & Expansion

Client: Staffordshire County Council

Overview

RAEBUILD successfully completed the Weston Road Academy Classroom Replacement and Expansion Project in October 2024, delivering a new standalone modular classroom building to replace ageing mobile classrooms that had reached the end of their operational life.

The Brief

Weston Road Academy required additional teaching accommodation to support a growing pupil population and replace existing mobile classrooms that had reached the end of their useful life. The project formed part of a wider investment programme funded in part through Section 106 developer contributions linked to local housing growth.

A key requirement was to provide a modern, standalone classroom facility that would increase capacity while integrating sensitively within the existing school environment.

The proposed building needed to maximise available space on a constrained site, minimise visual impact on neighbouring properties, and avoid disruption to existing parking and playground facilities. The design also needed to deliver a sustainable, accessible, and future-proof learning environment with a minimum design life of 60 years.

The Solution

RAEBUILD was appointed through the Staffordshire County Council Modern Methods of Construction Framework to develop the design and deliver the project as Principal Contractor.

Working closely with the client and design team, we refined the Stage 3 design and delivered a new standalone modular classroom building using a high-quality timber frame construction system. The project included foundations, external envelope works, mechanical and electrical installations, internal finishes, and associated external landscaping.

As Principal Designer (Building Regulations) and Principal Contractor, we managed all aspects of compliance, safety, and construction delivery. Extensive planning, segregation measures, and traffic management arrangements were implemented to ensure the works could be safely completed within a live school environment with minimal disruption.

The Outcome

Completed in October 2024, the project has provided Weston Road Academy with a modern, vibrant, and functional learning environment that supports the school’s long-term educational needs.

The new facility has replaced outdated mobile classrooms with high-quality teaching accommodation designed to improve comfort, accessibility, and energy performance. Delivered on programme and within a live operational school, the building now provides additional pupil capacity while enhancing the overall educational offering available to the local community.

Through careful design, construction management, and stakeholder collaboration, the project was completed with minimal disruption to pupils and staff. The result is a durable, future-proof facility that will continue to benefit the school, its families, and the wider community for many years to come.
